Cycle for Somalia

  • EVENT DATE 28 September 2011

A group of East London children (aged 3 – 16) from across 6 schools in East London, have come together to organise a sponsored cycle ride on Wednesday 28th September to raise money for our East Africa Children's Crisis appeal.

A cycle with a difference

As well as being a really fun way to raise money, it will also be an important reminder of the situation children are facing.

During the sponsored cycle ride the children will work together to try and cycle 890 laps of the park. This is the equivalent distance of Mogadishu to Dadaab, the Kenyan refugee camp.

Some of the children signing up for this bike ride have family and friends still living in Somalia, walking unimaginable distances to reach food and water.

The children will also be joined by Charlie Simpson, who in 2010 inspired the nation by raising £260,000 for UNICEF’s Haiti Emergency Appeal. Charlie says: “I am really glad I did my bike ride for UNICEF because I enjoyed it and it helped save thousands and thousands of children. I think every child should have a go at fundraising right now, because UNICEF needs money to help all the hungry children in Africa. Fundraising is important and small things can make a difference. It might save a few people's lives. Please sponsor us”

UNICEF is working in the region, but need your help to save the lives of even more children. Just £5 could feed a child for a week.

The children are coming together from the 6 schools in the Stepney Schools Partnership. These are Ben Jonson Primary, Cayley Primary, Halley Primary, Redlands Primary, Smithy Street Primary and Stepney Green Maths Computing and Science College.
